We Need Some Help!
We can always use help, so never assume that we don't until you check with us. One of our goals is to have enough musicians and crew to allow everyone to take off every so often from working to be able to worship with the congregation. So it doesn't really matter if you can sing or play an instrument. The most important thing you can bring to the team is your love for God and his children. We are here to serve Good Samaritan and the community.
We are always interested in more musicians, but at this time we are particularly interested in getting another bassist and add keyboards. So if you are interested in playing with us, help set up, run sound or video, give me a call, visit anyone on the team before or after any service or show up for rehearsal. The reheasals are on the calendar and are all in the great room where we meet for church.
Below is a table of the positions in the Worship Team. We welcome anyone that is willing and able to join us. It can really more fun than work once you get the hand of things. Musicians, you know who you are and if you have the ability. There are only a couple of criteria, you must be able to play by ear and be a fast learner. If you read music, its a plus, but when playing be ear, listening is more important than anything else.
For the technical positions, audio and video, experience is certainly a plus but is not required. What is required is good ears, some technical acuity, quick learner and lots of patience. Musicians can be tough to deal with, especially lead guitar players (that's me). If you can hook up and operate a computer, home stereo or home theater, you can learn this in a snap; same concept, just more. We have great equipment that practically runs itself. We use a Yamaha O1V digital board for the band mix and a software program called Media Shout for the video; kind of like Power Point on steroids. Everything is as automated as it can be within our price range. The sound gear looks more complicated than it is and like anything, it takes practice to get the hang of it. Once you've given this a try, you will have a new respect for that guy in the back turning knobs. Between Drew and I, we will either teach you how to do it or drive you nuts, or both. Either way, I promise it won't be boring.
Positions
- Sound: Set up and operate the audio for the service. Includes learning the basics of audio engineering, having microphones on and ready for speakers and musicians. We have this slot pretty well covered, but we can always use the help.
- Video: Set up and operate the video used in the service. Includes operating MediaShout presentation software on a laptop, operating a video camera and being sure that the correct feeds are run to the correct monitors in the overflow rooms. It requires constant attention to the front during the service; watch and listen to make sure the screens (slides) coincide with the lyrics, sermon and presentations.
- Crew: The crew is there to assist the band and the engineers. Load in, set up, connect microphones and equipment. It requires learning where everything goes, how to wrap cords (don't laugh, there is a right way) and take care of problems that arise during the service.
- Vocalists: Ability to harmonize (in tune) on the fly without music is the only requirement (besides actually being able to sing, of course).
- Keyboards: All types of keys; synthesizer, organ and piano. Ability to play by ear is absolutely necessary. Site reading is a plus.
- Bass: Guitar, stand-up, tuba; it doesn't matter. We have to give up our sound man if Kenny can't make it, so this is kind of important.
- Guitar: We current;y have 4 guitars at all levels of ability, so we really don't have a need, but we'd still love to have you come try us out. My preferences on this would be a lead or acoustic player with a lot of experience.
- All Instruments: We welcome any musical instruments. If you can play it, we want you to give us a try. Would an multinational praise team be great or what!
Anyone interested in joining the band needs to be able to sing or play by ear. Reading music is certainly a plus, but we don't have music for the majority of our songs and we typically don't play songs the way they were written, anyway.
Being a member of the Worship Team is work and play. It requires hours of practice and rehearsal, but when it all comes together, it is to God's glory, whether at rehearsal or at church. We get to experience our Lord's presence first hand every Sunday. We have learned that no matter how prepared or not we are on a given Sunday, God makes it work every time. We come away every week wondering how we did what we did and there is only one answer, our Lord Jesus Christ!
